Sneaky Swell Stokes Up Hopes for a Promising Winter Surf Season

At the beginning of last week, the Breakwater team proudly launched a new surf report page on the shop’s website, aiming to provide surfers in the Newport and Rockaway Beach communities with reliable weekly forecasts. Little did we know just how much those predictions for Sunday, the 19th, would come to life—and then some. While the outlook suggested decent conditions, nobody anticipated the perfection that unfolded. From dawn to dusk, the coastlines came alive with wave after wave, creating a paradise for surfers of all levels.

In Rhode Island, consistent sets rolled in throughout the day, with waves peaking at an inviting two to three feet. The manageable size made for crowded yet welcoming lineups, drawing in everyone from beginners to seasoned pros. Meanwhile, Rockaway Beach took it a step further, with breakers reaching heights of three to four feet, solidifying its reputation for slightly more powerful surf. While these heights won’t be breaking any records, they’ve been a refreshing change after weeks of lackluster conditions. For surfers, anything over two feet after a dry spell feels like a gift from the ocean.

Looking Ahead to Martin Luther King Jr. Day Waves

As we head into Monday, January 20th—Martin Luther King Jr. Day—the surf is shaping up to deliver again, though conditions will challenge even the hardiest of surfers. Forecasts show promising wave activity, but a plunge in air temperatures and a winter weather advisory in New York mean that braving the lineup will require both grit and proper gear. Newport might see snow-free skies and sunny conditions, but temperatures will remain frigid. For those willing to face the cold, it could be the perfect opportunity to test your limits and embrace the elements.
